Job Description
Automattic is the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and a number of other well-known products that millions of people use every day. They have been a 100% remote company since the day they launched. No offices, no forced commutes, no assigned desks. Everyone on their team works from home or wherever they want to work from.
They are looking for Software Developers to join their engineering teams. This is a real full time job with a proper salary, benefits and long term career growth – not a short contract or a freelance arrangement. If you're a developer who wants to work on products that really touch millions of users from the comfort of your own home, Automattic is one of the best places to do that.
It’s hard work but the environment is flexible. You'll work across time zones with teammates, contribute to open source projects and ship code that goes live to a massive global audience.
Job Responsiblity:
- Write clean and well tested code for Automattic's products
- Work on new features and improvements to existing systems
- Review code written by other developers on your team
- Fix bugs and performance issues reported by users or internal teams
- Collaborate with designers and product managers to build new functionality
- Contribute to open source projects where relevant
- Document your work clearly so the rest of the team can follow along
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of PHP, JavaScript, or Python — at least one of these
- Experience with WordPress development is a big plus
- Comfortable working in a fully remote and mostly async environment
- Good written English — most communication at Automattic happens through text
- Ability to manage your own work and meet deadlines without daily supervision
- At least 2 to 3 years of professional software development experience
- Familiarity with Git and version control workflows
Experience
A minimum of 2 to 3 years of professional development experience is required. Automattic values practical skills and real project experience over formal degrees. If you have built things that work and can show your code, that matters more than where you studied.
Working Hours
- Full-time: 40 hours per week
- Completely flexible — no fixed start or end time
- Work from any time zone in the world
- Most communication is async so you rarely need to be online at a specific hour
- Occasional team video calls but nothing mandatory on a daily basis
Job Benefits:
- Annual salary of $70,000 – $95,000 based on experience and skills
- Fully distributed team — work from absolutely anywhere
- Annual company meetups where the whole team gets together in person
- Home office setup budget provided when you join
- Open vacation policy — take time off when you need it
- Health insurance and other standard benefits
- Work on products used by over 40 percent of the entire internet
