Administrative Officer Jobs at Job Centre Plus - UK Government

Job Centre Plus On-site
Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK Full Time £22,000 - £27,000 /year Others Apply by Aug 8, 2026

Job Description

The Department for Work and Pensions is one of the biggest government employers in the UK. They run Job Centre Plus offices across the country and help millions of people every year with benefits, employment support, and financial assistance. Right now they need Administrative Officers to join their Leeds team and keep things running behind the scenes.

This is a stable government job with fixed hours, good pay, and proper benefits. No weekend work. No late nights. You work Monday to Friday and go home on time. If you want a job that is reliable and comes with long term security, this is worth applying for.

What the Job Involves

Your main role is to keep the office running smoothly. Day to day you will be:

  • Processing benefit claims and updating records in the system
  • Responding to letters, emails, and internal requests on time
  • Checking documents submitted by claimants for accuracy and completeness
  • Filing and organising both digital and paper based records
  • Answering internal queries from colleagues and passing them to the right department
  • Supporting your team with any admin tasks that come up during the day
  • Following DWP guidelines carefully in everything you process

Pay, Hours and Leave

  • £22,000 – £27,000 per year based on experience
  • 37 hours per week — Monday to Friday
  • 25 days paid annual leave plus UK bank holidays
  • Flexible working arrangements available after probation
  • No overtime pressure — you finish on time

Requirements

DWP keeps the entry requirements straightforward for this role:

  • You must be a UK citizen or have the right to work in the UK
  • A good standard of written and spoken English
  • Basic computer skills — you will be working on government systems all day
  • Attention to detail — mistakes in benefit records have real consequences for real people
  • Able to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly
  • Good time management and ability to stay on top of your workload
  • No degree required — GCSEs or equivalent are sufficient for this role
  • You must pass a basic security clearance check before starting

Is This Job Right for You

Before you apply think about whether this fits what you are looking for:

  • You prefer a structured and organised work environment
  • You are comfortable doing detailed admin work for most of your day
  • You want a Monday to Friday job with no evening or weekend shifts
  • You want job security that private sector roles often cannot offer
  • You are patient and careful when handling important paperwork
  • You want to work for an organisation that genuinely helps people

If that sounds like you, this role is a good match.

What the Government Offers

Working for DWP comes with benefits that most private employers do not match:

  • Civil Service pension — one of the best pension schemes in the UK
  • 25 days annual leave rising with length of service
  • Access to Civil Service learning and development programmes
  • Employee assistance programme for health and wellbeing support
  • Cycle to work scheme and other staff discounts
  • Job security that comes with working for a government department
  • Clear pay progression as you move up through the Civil Service grades

Your First Few Weeks

DWP provides proper training when you join. You will not be thrown in at the deep end. Your first few weeks will cover:

  • How to use the government systems and databases
  • DWP policies and how they apply to your daily work
  • Data protection and confidentiality rules
  • Who to contact when you need help or guidance
  • How performance and progression works within the Civil Service

About the Department for Work and Pensions

Job Centre Plus is their public facing service that helps people find work and access benefits. They employ over 80,000 people across the UK making them one of the most stable employers in the country.
